The Ladies of Amsterdam are two of the oldest living members of the world’s oldest profession. Louise and Martine Fokken are 70-year-old identical twin sisters who were both prostitutes in Amsterdam’s red light district for 50 years.
After 50 years of selling their bodies, struggling with arthritis and a lack of customers, the Fokkens sisters are now (almost) retired. Louise, a mother of four, has said her arthritis now makes some sexual positions (doggy style) ‘too painful’. And mother-of-three Martine admits she is finding it hard to attract new clients – except one elderly man who still comes for his weekly sado-maschism session. She said: ‘I couldn’t give him up. He’s been coming to me for so long it’s like going to church on a Sunday.’
Both women – who usually dress in identical red clothes – became prostitutes before the age of 20 to survive financially after escaping violent relationships.
With more than a century of sex work they claim they had sex with 355,000 men combined in their run, or about 177,500 each. That roughly comes out to 10 men a day each (assuming they took two weeks of vacation every year). Countless!
